Stay Alert With Nixle
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, in its continuous endeavor to keep our community connected and protected, would like to announce its new alert messaging service, NIXLE.
Nixle is a free, simple, and trusted messaging service that allows the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to send real-time public safety threats, alerts and community events to the public via the web, email and/or cell phone. Individual users get to choose what messages they want to receive and how they would like to receive them.

2009 - A Year of Accomplishments
2009 proved to be an adventurous year for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. With necessary refocusing to maximize manpower and resources, we temporarily had to suspend programs such as our School Resource Units and our Special Response Team. Although these reallocations were necessary, the jobs they performed in connecting with the community were left vacant. In order to ensure we continued to be communicative and responsive to the public we serve, we launched several no or low- cost programs with direct benefit to the Pima County Community.
One of the most noticeable changes was the launch of this website. www.pimasheriff.org has been developed as a user friendly access point for information regarding everything from district office locations to the Inmate Look-Up roster, from rules and regulations to the Neighborhood Resource Guide. Our “Contact Us” feature also allows the community to pose questions to the department and receive timely answers to their situations or referrals to other agencies who can assist.
More technological advances made way for introduction of the Community Awareness Project, spearheaded by the Community Resources Unit. The CAP bridges the communication gap between our department and the community at large. Goals of the project include keeping open lines of communication at the forefront. Just this year alone, the CAP has introduced enhanced crime mapping through CrimeReports.com, and the recently launched Nixle alert messaging system to the residents of Pima County.
CrimeReports.com allows users to view crime maps of incidents which occurred in the unincorporated areas of Pima County and the communities of Green Valley, Marana, Oro Valley and Sahuarita. Nationwide Sex Offender information is also available at www.crimereports.com.
Nixle is the alert messaging system that will replace the existing SafeLink system in the coming months. Nixle allows real-time messages to be sent via text, email or both to subscribers. The messages can be geared toward the type of information being sent such as alerts, advisories, community and traffic. The system is used to notify subscribers of road closures, suspect information, missing persons and community notifications that include local sex offender notifications.
Also falling under the CAP initiatives are two programs managed by the Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers. Neighborhood Watch groups are managed and kept up-to-date. Metro area SAV’s now patrol the active Neighborhood Watch organizations to assist in our crime prevention efforts and through connecting with the citizens in their our residential areas. Crime Free Multi-Housing programs have also been launched for area apartment and mobile home complexes. These programs provide critical information to provide for safer multi-housing areas.
The SAV’s have also added several new members and increased their patrol ranks. SAV’s not only patrol in Neighborhood Watch locations, but also in the numerous Pima County parks. With several knowledgeable, trained volunteers, the community is afforded increased observance and crime deterrence.
Other notable changes in allowing citizens to stay connected include improvements made at our Adult Detention Center. With the new Electronic Message Exchange, family and friends can email their incarcerated loved ones as an aded way to stay in touch. EZmoneyload Kiosks were also added to the PCADC so funds could be deposited into inmate accounts easily both at the jail and online. These great innovations help decrease the stress on families who have an inmate housed in our facility. We are pleased to offer these programs and expand our services to all we serve.
It is believed that the Community Awareness Project and similar programs will prevent crime across the community instead of simply moving problems from neighborhood to neighborhood. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has taken great strides to empower the community at the grassroots level. Regardless of the economic binds, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department endeavors to find ways to assist the community and be proactive to its needs. The Department keeps its focus on ensuring safety for citizens in their communities and homes. Look for more CAP initiatives in 2010!
