On July 24, 2012, at approximately 9:23 p.m., the Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a serious vehicle collision in the intersection of Palo Verde Road and Irvington Road. Upon arrival, deputies found 3 vehicles involved with one being on fire. Rural Metro Fire Department responded as well, extinguished the burning car and provided medical attention to the injured. The driver of the burning vehicle, a Ford Ranger pickup truck, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Traffic Unit also responded to the scene. The initial evaluation of evidence found at the scene indicated that the pickup truck was travelling southbound on Palo Verde Road. A red Ford Focus passenger car was travelling westbound on Irvington and ran a red light. The two vehicles then collided in the intersection. The force of the impact pushed both vehicles into the eastbound lane of Irvington Road, where they collided with a third vehicle. This was a passenger car and transport vehicle for the Arizona Department of Corrections. It was occupied by a corrections officer and an inmate who was being returned to the correctional facility on Wilmot Road after a hospital visit.

The corrections officer and the inmate suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to University Medical Center South Campus for treatment. The driver of the Ford Focus admitted that he had consumed alcoholic beverages earlier that night. He was transported to University Medical Center for evaluation of his injuries.

The investigation continues.
