Bombs located in Ajo, Arizona end with arrests of two individuals.

On January 22, 2012, Pima County Sheriff’s Ajo District deputies identified a suspect, John David Ford (DOB 02/16/73), in a case involving military surface to air missile simulators known as GTR-18a “Smoky SAMs”. Deputies obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s home and another family member’s residence. During the service of the warrant at Mr. Ford’s residence, deputies found suspicious items including what they believed to be a pipe bomb. The Pima Regional Bomb Squad responded along with ATF Explosives Technology Branch and ATF Tucson. Further search of the residence revealed two galvanized metal pipe bombs and other bomb making materials.
During a render-safe procedure utilizing the Bomb Squad robot, one of the pipe bombs exploded unintentionally. Ajo Fire and Ambulance were on scene when the explosion occurred. No one was injured at the time of the detonation. The residence was a block home and contained the blast and all fragments. All other items found inside the residence were rendered safe as well. Through investigation and evidence found at the scene, two individuals were arrested. Mr. Ford was arrested for 4 counts of Possession and Manufacture of a Prohibited Weapon, an improvised explosive device, and 3 counts of Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Rocket more than four (4) ounces. Becky Leon (DOB 07/11/85) was arrested for Tampering with Evidence. Both were booked into the jail. ATF ETB and Tucson Field Office are continuing the investigation with the Pima Regional Bomb Squad.
