Video Visitation Implemented at the Jail

Inmate on video visitation

The Pima County Adult Detention Center recently implemented a Video Visitation system. Video visitation allows inmates more frequent visits with family and friends. It also allows public visitors to call and schedule a visitation time versus arriving at the jail facility and waiting 2 – 3 hours to receive a visit time.

Video visitation consists of both the inmate and visitor sitting in front of a video screen and camera – the inmate remains in his/her housing unit and the vistor remains in the front lobby area of the Main Jail Complex. To ensure privacy, communication is done via a telephone handset.

Similar provisions are available for professional vistors (attorneys, investigators, probation officers) to conduct business with inmates. For professional visits, there are individual secured booths to ensure confidentiality issues are not jeopardized. Professional visitors have the choice of meeting with the inmate face-to-face or via the video system.

Video visitation has been well received by the inmates and the public. Waiting times, as well as the crowds, have decreased. Many professional visitors prefer video visitation. They are able to meet with the inmate quickly and do not have to wait to be escorted through secure areas for a face-to-face visit.

Video visitation has improved the safety and security within the Pima County Adult Detention Center by eliminating inmate movement for public visitation.
