Each year, the Tucson Sidewinders host D.A.R.E. Day at Tucson Electric Park. This event, provides an incentive to D.A.R.E. fifth grade students to follow the program and make positive, healthy choices. In order to attend D.A.R.E. Day activities, students must be actively engaged in the D.A.R.E. curriculum and be current in their assignments.
D.A.R.E. Day was held on May 4, 2005. Approximately 2,000 students attended from schools throughout Pima County. The students were treated to pre-game festivities, joining D.A.R.E. deputies in games such as frisbee-golf and a water balloon toss. There were static displays of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department's Command Center, H2 show vehicle, and D.A.R.E. patrol vehicles. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department's Bomb Squad provided demonstrations of the bomb robot, and the Pima Regional SWAT Team displayed their skills in a live-action scenario, including the apprehension of a “suspect” by a Sheriff's Department canine.
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik threw out the first ceremonial pitch. The Tucson Sidewinders took the field against the Sacramento River Cats. During the game, D.A.R.E. students enjoyed t-shirt giveaways and snacks, allowing them a brief respite from their daily studies.
