American Red Cross Local Real Heroes

The American Red Cross honored two (2) Pima County Sheriff's Department members at the 2005 Local Real Heroes Breakfast on May 6, 2005.

Deputy E. Johnson was recognized for saving a three-year-old girl from a burning house. He responded, with two (2) other deputies, to a call regarding a suicide attempt. The deputies forced their way into the home and discovered a woman trying to set herself and her three-year-old daughter on fire. Deputy Johnson ran through the fire and rescued the child, preventing serious injury or death.

Deputy R. Hamilton accepted an award on behalf of his former K-9 partner, “Rico.” In just one year, Rico helped apprehend more than a dozen felony suspects. Tragically, while chasing a suspect, Rico was hit by a vehicle on Interstate 19 south of Tucson. Rico’s death marked the first-ever Pima County Sheriff’s Department K-9 lost in the line of duty.
