NIXLE IS HERE!
Get Connected, Stay Informed!
Communication has come a long way since the days of land line telephones and the 6 o’clock news to get accurate information.  With society on the move, information needs to be sent and received faster with more reliability, especially when that information includes alert and priority information coming from a law enforcement agency to the public.  Because of these changing times, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department welcomes you to Nixle.

Nixle is a community information service provider exclusively designed to be a secure and reliable communications platform for public safety agencies.  The Pima County Sheriff’s Department uses Nixle to send out real-time messages regarding important events and information occurring in the community. These messages can be received through a variety of ways, all set by the user. The registered user can choose to receive messages on their text-capable cell phone, email account, by visiting the Nixle website, or any combination of the three.

The messages sent by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department will include only pertinent need-to-know information to help citizens stay in touch and informed.  These messages may include Amber Alerts, missing person reports, requests for assistance in identifying crime suspects, road closure information, and the occasional community notification, such as Department sponsored Shred-A-Thons.  All the information is safe, secure and trustworthy!

Registration is easy and quick.  Click here to register and begin receiving alerts and notifications.  Once registered, users can choose what types of messages they want, and even how and when they want to receive the messages. Below is a listing of the different types of messages that the Pima County Sheriff’s Department may elect to send.  You’ll notice the easy color-coded system to easily identify the priority of the message.

Alert messages are used for Amber Alerts, kidnappings and other crimes where immediate public assistance is needed.

Advisory messages are used when we’re seeking information on suspects of past crimes or inform the public of priority, need-to-know issues such as power outages and flooding.

Community messages are used to inform residents about upcoming Sheriff’s Department sponsored events.

Traffic messages are sent out by our Communications Section on traffic related issues to include major road closures and accidents.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department endeavors to only send out essential information.  Your email and text boxes will not be filled with SPAM or junk mail messages.  Your user information is not monitored, sold or used for anything other than sending you the messages you choose to receive.  Since the system is secure and the agency has been authenticated, you know that messages you receive from the PCSD are important and pertinent to you as a citizen of Pima County.

NIXLE IS FREE, however, standard text messages rates may apply if your cell phone service does not include free messaging.

Since Nixle messages are geographically based, users register their location.  The Pima County Sheriff’s Department can then transmit messages to a specific area (below left), community wide (below right) or to all subscribers.

Nixle also understands that users may want information about more than one location, so citizens can choose as many locations as they want, staying up on all events and happenings that may affect them and their loved ones.  Nixle is also growing nationwide allowing users to choose locations in a variety of cities and states.

Who Should Register?

The more citizens reached with a single text, the faster the word can spread about any event that may develop in the county. All Pima County residents are encouraged to sign up to receive these messages and begin connecting with the Sheriff’s Department. Nixle will soon completely replace Safelink, so those subscribers are especially encouraged to sign up soon! Register now!

Community groups, businesses that employ drivers, and citizens who commute frequently are also encouraged to sign up, so when a person is reported missing or a crime suspect is in an area additional eyes in the community are assisting law enforcement in obtaining vital information.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department does not advocate and highly discourages reading text messages while driving.  Please read messages only when safe to do so.

Social networking applications like Twitter, Facebook and Myspace have been so powerful in connecting family and friends. Nixle now allows for the same connection between all of us and our communities. The difference with Nixle is the fact that you will know the information received is the real deal. With Nixle messages, you’ll be sure to get:

  • No impostors and no rumors.
  • No commercial advertising attached to any Nixle messaging.
  • No SPAM.
  • No comments, emails or texts from other users in response to the original message. Nixle doesn’t allow return responses.
  • Contact information to the PCSD if you have information in response to a message.
  • Timely, accurate, reliable information.
  • Text messages and/or full email messages...your choice!
