*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

"Scam of the Week"

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has become aware of the public receiving “cold calls” by telemarketers.  The caller identifies themself as a representative of the Fraternal Order of Police and/or the Sheriff’s Association.

The Fraternal Order of Police and Sheriff’s Association for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department does NOT solicit funds from the public.  Any funds received for these organizations are done by the citizen first contacting the organization.

  • Be wary of solicitations that purport to be for policemen or firefighters.  Con artists often make up names of phony police or fire associations.  If you receive a call like this, call your local police or fire department to find out if it is soliciting money from the public.
  • If you believe the caller is trying to defraud you, call 911.
  • Ask for the caller’s name, address, and phone number.

Please know that identity theft is on the rise; your personal information needs to be protected at all times.  A skilled telemarketer can extract information that an unsuspecting victim may not even realize.  Do not provide any personal information over the telephone.

Using common sense will decrease your chances of being scammed.
