Two men have been booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center for the murder of Jonas Mendivil Gastelum. The badly burned body of Mr. Gastelum (DOB 05/17/74) was found in the 9700 blk. of S. Swan Road on December 9, 2006.
Francisco Javier Lopez (DOB 08/07/88) and Adrian Alejandro Iturralde (DOB 10/08/86) were arrested on Saturday, August 18, 2007, following an intensive investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit. Homicide detectives learned that the two suspects had possibly fled to Mexico; however, they found evidence that both suspects were U.S. Citizens. Investigators began working with Mexican Authorities to locate these individuals. Necessary paperwork, to include arrest warrant information and proof of U.S. Citizenship, were provided to the Mexican Authorities.
On Saturday, August 18, 2007, Mexican Authorities located the two men in Agua Prieta. Homicide Detectives were contacted and coordinated the transfer of the suspects to U.S. Customs officials in Douglas, Arizona. U.S. Customs contacted the Douglas Police Department at which time both Mr. Lopez and Mr. Iturralde were served arrest warrants and booked into the Cochise County Jail in Bisbee, Arizona.
On Monday, August 20, 2007, both men were extradited to Pima County in Tucson, Arizona, where they both face 1st Degree Murder charges.
