The Ajo District is unique from the other patrol districts of the Sheriff's Department in that, due to the remoteness from metro Tucson, the District frequently operates as a stand-alone unit. Ajo personnel handle emergency situations until support and logistics from Tucson arrive. The Department's specialized units for major crime investigations, search and rescue missions, special traffic enforcement, and narcotic investigations support Ajo personnel. The Ajo District has its own communications and corrections areas. The district's authorized staff consists of 3 sergeants, 14 deputies, 1 detective, 1 corrections sergeant, 8 corrections officers, 1 911 dispatch supervisor, 5 911 dispatchers, a Public Safety Support Specialist, and the Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers, all supervised by the Ajo District Commander.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department Ajo District is geographically the largest of the six districts that comprise the Uniform Operations Division. The Ajo District encompasses approximately 5,000 square miles. It starts at the eastern boundary of the Tohono O'Odham Indian Reservation and continues west across the Cabeza Prieta Refuge to the Yuma County line. The northern boundary starts at the Maricopa County line and continues south to the Mexico border. Parts of the Barry Goldwater Military Range, the Organ Pipe National Monument, and vast tracts of Bureau of Land Management rangeland lie within the Ajo District boundaries.

The District office is located in the community of Ajo, 138 miles west of Tucson at the end of SR86 and approximately 100 miles south of Phoenix along SR85. The District shares co-jurisdiction with several Federal law enforcement agencies and has primary jurisdictional responsibilities within western Pima County and the communities of Ajo, Why, and Lukeville.
